What are you most excited about in your new role at The EdVenture Group?
K: I’m most excited to step into a role that allows me to deepen my commitment to West Virginia while contributing to work that reaches partners and communities across the country. My roots are here—I’ve built my career alongside West Virginia educators, workforce leaders, and students—but I’ve also had the opportunity to support national and multi-state initiatives that shape how rural communities design pathways to opportunity.
EdVenture’s work reflects that same balance: deeply local, but increasingly national in scope. I’m energized by the chance to collaborate with WV schools and families while also helping expand our innovative, community-centered approaches across the U.S. And I’m grateful to join an organization founded by educators that listens first, co-creates solutions, and uplifts local strengths in every partnership.
How will your prior experience contribute to your new role at EdV?
K: My experience covers the entire range of education and workforce systems—rooted in Appalachian communities and strengthened by national efforts. I started my teaching career in early elementary classrooms, supporting literacy and STEM education, and later moved to higher education to teach and mentor students in social science and career pathways. I have also taken on key roles in school operations and in Generation WV’s first Impact Fellowship, which enhanced my ability to develop programs from scratch and guide communities through growth and change.
At the systems level, my work has focused on federal service and national consulting—overseeing complex grant portfolios, fostering federal–state partnerships, and providing technical support to rural and Appalachian communities. Through this work, I’ve helped organizations understand federal requirements, strengthen internal systems, and develop programs that are both compliant and community-focused. This experience in systems navigation and funder expectations directly informs my operations and capacity-building role at Ed Venture, enabling me to support our team and partners with clarity, strategy, and a thorough understanding of how effective programs are created and maintained.
What is a quote or saying that resonates with you as it relates to your views on the importance of education?
K: “We are all just walking each other home.” — Ram Dass
This quote captures the heart of my approach to education and community work. At every stage of the learning journey—whether with kindergarteners, college students, or adult learners—we are companions helping one another grow, discover, and imagine new possibilities.
Education is not just about skill-building; it’s about belonging, encouragement, and the shared belief that we can build a better path forward together. That mindset guides the relationships I build with students, families, educators, and partners alike.
What’s a fun fact about you?
K: A fun fact: as a kid, I got slimed at the old Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando. It’s still one of my most memorable childhood moments—and probably an early sign of my tendency to lean into adventure, say yes to unexpected opportunities, and have fun along the way.
What can someone find you doing outside of work hours for fun?
K: Outside of work, you’ll likely find me outdoors with my dog, exploring the hills and trails of the Appalachian region I call home. When I’m not outside, I’m usually in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes, watching basketball, or planning my next travel adventure—almost always centered around a restaurant I’ve been dreaming about. Whether I’m close to home or on the road, I’m happiest when I’m learning, exploring, and sharing meaningful experiences with others.
