Today, The EdVenture Group, Inc. was awarded $717,166 by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for the Simulated Workplace Entrepreneurship Education Pathway (SWEEP) project. SWEEP is a collaborative effort between The EdVenture Group, Marshall University’s iCenter, West Virginia Department of Education’s Simulated Workplace Initiative, Standwatch Academy, and Intuit Education. The program will infuse entrepreneurship into existing career and technical education programs to encourage the emerging workforce to explore and create new opportunities within their local community.

“We’re very excited and thankful for ARC’s support of this important project that will impact economic diversity in local West Virginia communities. The collaboration and opportunities made possible by this funding will help to shape a stronger WV over the next three years.”

Today’s announcement is one of 54 investments totaling $44.4 million via ARC’s POWER (Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization) Initiative, a congressionally funded opportunity targeting federal resources to help communities and regions that have been affected by job losses in coal mining, coal power plant operations, and coal-related supply chain industries due to the changing economics of America’s energy production.

“It’s an opportunity for students to think differently about the future of our state and their own role in it. SWEEP provides students with foundational entrepreneurial skills that allows them to recognize, or in many cases create, their own prosperity within their local community.”

“I congratulate The EdVenture Group, Inc. for being an FY 2019 POWER grantee, and commend them on the leadership they have shown in their community,” said ARC Federal Co-Chairman Tim Thomas. “POWER grants are playing a critical role in supporting coal-impacted communities in the Appalachian Region as they diversify economies, invest in growth-oriented infrastructure, train a next-generation workforce, and ingrain resiliency and hope into their local fabric. Projects like this help ensure a prosperous future for Appalachia.”
